SDN 7 Namang - Bangka, Indonesia
SDN 7 Namang is a public elementary school located in a village called Kayu Besi, within the district of
Namang of the Bangka Belitung Province of Indonesia. This public school is led by a principal,
17 teachers, and a staff team nurturing about 300 primary school students (1st to 6th grade).
Before Lighthouse Library’s presence, the school only had
a traditional humble library in a 15 sqm room.
In May 2022, Farrell visited the school building to meet the teachers and students.
During that half-day visit, he interacted with them through engaging activities:
demonstrating how to use the Lighthouse Library, and reading the story of an e-book together.
He also spoke with the teachers, staff, and principal of SDN 7 Namang. He discussed the
future of Lighthouse Library’s presence and was pleased to hear their heightened enthusiasm
in encouraging students to visit the Lighthouse Library regularly.
Furthermore, Farrell helped with the school’s transition to a digital learning environment through English classes –
reducing the students’ language barrier since many parts of the internet are only available in
English. Thus, in September 2022, he volunteered to hold extra English classes with the students
from time to time. There, he would read books in English together to introduce them to words and sentences
in English and stimulate their excitement when reading English books. Farrell was delighted to see the students’
enthusiasm for reading through these adventurous stories.
During one of Farrell’s interactive reading classes (November 2022),
he observed that the students were very excited when told to use the e-library with laptops.
They also seemed to be more well-versed in navigating through our website. As Farrell
and the teacher started the lesson, Farrell noticed that the students seemed very eager
to read and understand these English books; some even took it a step further and requested
some English translations of Indonesian phrases used in their daily lives. He felt content
seeing how Lighthouse Library has supported the growth of their love for reading and their
eagerness to learn this new language.
Yayasan Salib Putih - Central Java, Indonesia
Yayasan Salib Putih is a non-profit foundation which manages an orphanage,
located in the city of Salatiga in the province of Central Java, Indonesia.
Over the recent years, Yayasan Salib Putih has gradually gained more access to
electronic devices and the internet.
Farrell believes that Lighthouse Library would provide Yayasan Salib Putih an impactful benefit
- it complements the orphans’ learning by sprouting a love for reading, in the digital environment
they have already been adapting with. Hence, Lighthouse Library partnered with them in April 2022.
Sekolah Pondok Domba - Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta
Sekolah Pondok Domba is a non-profit primary school located next to a railroad, with a mission to provide education
to those unattended by the national schools. The students enrolled here do not have birth certificates and other
legal documents to gain rights for Indonesian public school enrollment. Though this school’s staff team devoted substantial
efforts to help grow these students, there are still limitations in their academics – this school is built by an NGO that relies on volunteers and donors.
After Farrell found out about Sekolah Pondok Domba, he felt
that the organization and its students can greatly benefit from
the digital exposure that Lighthouse Library gives; the limited
sources of knowledge provided in this school can be supplemented with
those available on the internet. Hence, Lighthouse Library partnered with
Sekolah Pondok Domba.
In June 2022, Farrell visited this school eager to meet the students and teachers there for the first time.
Here, he introduced the features of Lighthouse Library and held a short reading class where he read through
an e-book in this e-library so that members of Sekolah Pondok Domba can familiarize themselves with this website.
Farrell was delighted to see their eagerness to have a digital learning environment
incorporated into a part of their studies.
“The book I read was pleasant, simple, and it gives a good example of what we as a
school can follow. The website was very easy to interact with and navigate around” -
Yosua (student at Sekolah Pondok Domba, translated).
Sekolah Pondok Domba - Kapuk, Cengkareng
This branch of Sekolah Pondok Domba is built in a different district (Cengkareng) since many underprivileged children live in this area.
These children are raised in low-income households and do not have rights to attend public education in Indonesia either. Farrell was
touched by the school's founding organization’s efforts to expand their impact and influence to spread social good, inspiring him to
provide the Lighthouse Library to more of their schools, including this one. Thus, Farrell visited their school in January 2023 to
introduce this e-library to the teachers and students; this website can give these students additional books
to read, as well as exposure to digital learning.
Yayasan Hati Suci - DKI Jakarta, Indonesia
Yayasan Hati Suci is an organization which consists of an orphanage (Rumah Hati Suci) and a school for students from
elementary up to high school. Although English is indeed taught in their curriculum, their learning
is not often conducted digitally. After contacting them, the Farrell visited
the students and teachers in August 2022 to brief and discuss the usage of Lighthouse Library.
Paud Anda Luri Kids - East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia
Paud Anda Luri Kids is a school for less privileged kindergarteners in Sumba, a remote island in Indonesia.
There, the students and teachers face limitations due to their isolated location restricting their access to resources, including books.
Fortunately, Lighthouse Library has a handful of visual-heavy books suited for
kindergarteners. Thus, Farrell reached out to Paud Anda Luri Kids; by October 2022, their teachers incorporated
this e-library into the children's learning. With just one laptop and projector, they held group reading classes
with the additional storybooks provided in Lighthouse Library.
